Module 6 Mental Illness in the Real World

Q Let's get real with each other: 1. Do you personally know anyone suffering from one of the mental illnesses discussed in Module 6 A/B? If so, what is their relationship to you? What are their symptoms--what type do you think they have? How do they cope with their illness? What type of treatment are they seeking? If you don't know anyone suffering from one of these illnesses, share your thoughts on how you feel the about these disorders and what steps you would take if you did have a friend or family member suffering from such an illness. Do you think that the general public has an understanding of these disorders? 2. Have you ever encountered someone talking to themselves or behaving oddly? What did you think? How did you react? Now that you know a bit more about psychological illness what are your impressions of how our medical system deals with mental illness? Has your insurance ever screwed you or someone you know that was seeking treatment for a psychological illness? How do you think the media helps/hurts our understanding of mental illness? Do you have any suggestions for how we can make improvements to the horrible system we currently have?

• 1. Yes I personally know someone who suffers from one of the mental illnesses discussed in Module 6 A/B? My late great aunt was diagnosed with schizophrenia during the middle of her life. From what I saw she suffered from the following symptoms; delusion of grandeur, delusion of persecution, alogia, and avolition towards the end of her life. I believe she suffered from disorganized schizophrenia, because she had a combination of positive and negative symptoms. during her younger years she coped by going to church and being very religious and shopping. At the time I was too young to know if she was receiving treatment, but up until she passed last month, she was cared for by my aunt and cousins. I personally don't think that the general public has an understanding of these disorders.
